ABOUT THE KEMENÇE

A  musical instrument that flourished predominantly in the multicultural environment of Constantinople (Istanbul). The earliest recordings of the kemence are found in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Those consisted of pieces from the literary (formal) repertoire as well as the repertoire popular at the taverns of Istanbul: songs and instrumental performances that were highly demanding. Today it is played by both Turkish and Greek musicians. Depending on the repertoire, which is now extremely expanded, performers can chose between intestinal or metal strings. The wood of the main body can be mulberry, walnut, cherry or elm, while the top can be made of cypress or cedar.
